Understanding Diabetes in School-Age Children

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar (glucose). In children, the most common types are Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body no longer makes insulin and requires daily insulin therapy. Type 2 diabetes, which is becoming more common in children, is often linked to genetics, lifestyle, and the body not using insulin properly.

With proper care, children with diabetes can thrive in school. Managing diabetes may involve monitoring blood sugar levels, taking insulin or other medications, healthy eating, and regular physical activity. School staff work closely with families and healthcare providers to support students’ medical needs and ensure their safety throughout the school day.
