African American art, cuisine and much more will be featured Thursday, Jan. 28, at 4 p.m., as Murfreesboro City Schools and Patterson Park Community Center celebrate The African American Journey. The event will be held at Patterson Park Community Center located at 521 Mercury Blvd.
The free celebration will recognize several aspects of African American history and culture through song, performances, artistic expression and interactive exhibits.
“We are excited to be working with Patterson Park to bring our community another installment of this event. It’s important to understand the past so we can learn from it and appreciate what previous generations have gone through,” stated City Schools Outreach Coordinator Greg Lyles.
Several participants from African American Voices of Past and Present, previously know as The Wisdom of the Elders, will display artwork and share their stories and insights with visitors as part of the genealogy and research program.
In addition to student performances and art, the event will include a soul food tasting, community partners fair, and a children’s activity center featuring games and crafts.
Murfreesboro City Schools is a district of twelve schools committed to the academic and personal success of each child. For more information contact Essence Brisco at 615-893-2313.
